Home Calendar and Happy Tuesday Level One Level Two Level Three Level Four Registration

Neighborhood School has involved children in a unique learning community since its beginning in 1986 as a private, alternative school with a family-like atmosphere. Our student body includes children ages 4 through 12 years old from Boston’s neighborhoods. A team of excellent teachers and 60 children at 2 adjacent sites share a joy of learning.

Students spend an average of two years within each of our four homeroom levels, learning as they are ready while exploring many topics and developing skills. Literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, technology projects, life skills and personal development are curriculum components integrated into our days.

While our school is valued for its intimacy, openings are extremely limited. Siblings of current students and children of our staff are given first consideration for any openings. Parents desiring to tour our school may do so by calling or emailing to register for a small group tour for adults and babes in arms from 9:15 – 10:45 a.m. as follows:

Thursday, November 10

Tuesday, November 29

Thursday, December 8

Tuesday, January 10

Thursday, January 26

Parents interested in having their child’s application considered for September 2006 openings should submit Student Register and Student Information forms with a $25.00 application fee by January 31. Applications will be reviewed and child visits will be offered if the possibility of an appropriate opening exists. As we work to balance and broaden many aspects among a classroom of returning students, we invite a few applicants to visit for each known vacancy. Visitors not being offered a position have an option of joining a short-term waiting list through later spring to early fall, in the event that an unanticipated opening arises.

We hope this information is of help as you consider learning opportunities for your child.

Financial Assistance

Since its beginning, Neighborhood School has prioritized the development of the school’s financial assistance fund. Each year, returning and new families are welcomed to apply for assistance if the total costs exceed a family’s financial resources. Applications for assistance may be requested and responses are available within 10 days. Returning families are given priority status in the process as the school highly values multiple year participation in our program. Approximately 30% of school families receive assistance in varying amounts.
