Happy Tuesday!

Weekly news for parents of Neighborhood School

January 23, 2007

NS is closed this Friday, January 26

NS teachers will be visiting other schools this Friday in order to further fuel their great teaching. We'll see everyone Sunday at the Potluck and classes will resume on Monday.

Sign-up for the Potluck!

  • Our Family Potluck will be held this Sunday, January 28 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Covenant Congregational Church, 455 Arborway near Forest Hills. Parking is available in the Courthouse lots but residence only signs need to be followed near the condos. Parking is also available on Morton Street behind the church and courthouse.
  • Each family in the school signs up to bring food, lend a helping hand and perhaps, even to share some talent! Please use the sign-up sheet that corresponds with your youngest NS child's level. If you are unavailable to join us, please leave a note of regret on the sign up sheet.
  • A captain from each level calls parents who have not signed up by tomorrow. WE NEED 3 PARENTS (not L3) TO VOLUNTEER TO BE CAPTAINS. Thanks.
  • Families arrive at the church at 4:30, take food to the kitchen (make labels and list ingredients as needed), put on name tags and begin some warm-up activities. Our Rock Band will begin to play a little before 5:00Food service begins at 5:15 (it takes helpers a while to prepare the two identical food lines). Ovens, stove top and microwave are available for warming.
  • Throughout the event, parent helpers rotate according to the duty he/she signed up to perform. It's a great way to become acquainted.
  • The Variety Show will begin by 6:30 and usually concludes a little past 7:00. Families who aren't cleaning up begin departing around 7:15. Remember to claim your dishes!

Ice Skating for Levels 2,3,4 tomorrow

Scott will head back to Kelly Rink with Levels 4,3,2 tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12:35. Please send helmets, skates, and warm winter gear. Level One will have outdoor PE but not skating tomorrow.

A few more for Chess?  submitted by Shari Feibel

Five families have signed up students for our proposed afterschool chess class on Monday afternoons. We need 3 more!  Sam and Eli have been taking chess classes throughout the fall and winter and their teacher has the time and is willing to do an additional class here at NS on Monday afternoons.  If your NS daughter/son could start at the beginning of February, please let me know. Classes would last one hour at a cost of $10 each and continue for about 8 weeks. We have loved our classes with Dmitri, a graduate student in business.  He has a very positive and gentle approach with children and is a wonderful chess player and teacher. Please contact Shari (samelimom@yahoo.com or 617.731.2310) if you are interested or have any questions.

Please note

  • Our summer session dates will be the weeks of August 6 and 13. The two week session of Favorite Things for Level One and Two children will have a home-base at 34 Peter Parley and Jump Start for some students in Levels Three and Four will be based across the street. Back again this year will be NS alum Liz Johnson and her friends from Oberlin College who will bring Circus Arts to both groups. Program information and registration will be distributed in early February.
  • Level Two's in-house research projects on various bats and lizards are now on display in their classroom. Parents are encouraged to stop in and learn this week!
  • Scent-free please:  Joyce and Donna have asthma that can be triggered by certain perfumed scents. Please take care with hair products and lotions; send children to school as scent-free as possible. If you're coming into our building, please minimize your cologne/perfume use. Thank you.

Parent-to-Parent (notices of events, etc.)

From Franklin Park Coalition: Winter Volunteer Day - Saturday, February 3, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. we'll clear catbrier that is killing young trees and it's been so warm we may be able to do spring-like jobs! Wear old clothes, bring clippers and gloves if you have them. We'll also have tools and of course, donuts. If you know high school students who need to complete community service requirements - send them our way.
If the weather's bad, call 617-908-4002 or 617-894-6204 to see if we're on - and as always, call for directions and more details.
